Based on the extraordinary life of Leonardo Da Vinci, the day will explore his art and science. Students will look at and learn about examples of his work, build models of his machines and see why some of them seem to be designed not to work! Exercises include squaring the circle based on the proportions of the Vitruvian man, modelling the Architron cannon, Leo’s parachute, perspective, dissection and anatomy.

Location: In your school, a science lab or work room, a position to launch parachutes from.

Skills: Manual dexterity, science principles, teamwork and leadership.
Learning Outcome: Leonardo’s position in art, science and history, perspective, the maths behind the proportions of the Vitruvian man, air resistance, gas pressure, chemical reactions (irreversible), trajectories and the ethics of human dissection.
