A serious, but engaging look at the biology and epidemiology of some modern diseases. Over the course of the day students will use a number of examples, including HIV, TB, Ebola, SARS and MRSA, to compare bacterial and viral diseases. In addition to biological and epidemiological studies, students will assess the impact of these on communities in different parts of the world. The subject will be approached through modelling activities, presentations and strategy planning. This course will be helpful to those wishing to study medicine.

Learning Outcome: Scale of animal, bacterial cells and virus particles, bacterial contamination, biology of bacteria and viruses, epidemiology of bacterial and viral diseases, especially HIV, data analysis, epidemiology principles, history of specific diseases, epidemiological methods for tracing disease movement through a community with an example to pursue.
